Arachis hypogaea is a legume crop, with the peanut pods developing underground, hence the common name ground nut. Although botanically a legume (member of the pea family), the taste is nut like, and in food terms A. hypogaea is called a nut. Peanuts have been eaten for thousands of years in South America, and gained worldwide popularity in the late 19th and 20th century. In Udo Island, a little island to the east of Jeju Island, South Korea, peanuts are cultivated in gold-containing water (13 ppb), and these peanuts have become known as Gold Peanuts. A. hypogaea contains high fat and protein as well as unsaturated fatty acids and tocopherol, providing a good source of energy. In Traditional Korean Medicine, peanuts are recommended to stop coughing, to build blood, and to support organ health.
Peanuts were once perceived as an unhealthy food because of high fat content (50% w/w). After lots of researches, however, it became a beneficial food for long-term health based on the findings of vitamin E, minerals, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. Genistein is the most abundant isoflavone present in peanuts, and acts as phytoestrogen. It binds to estrogen receptor β and has been reported to improve skin health by helping recover from photodamage and wounds.
