Plant Story

Vitis vinifera known as ‘common grape vine’ is possibly one of the oldest cultivated fruit plants, records dateback thousands of years BC and to Neolithic times. The fruit is a berry known as a grape and can be eatenfresh, dried or fermented into wine. The first written account of grapes and wine is from an AncientSumerian text of the third millennium BC. Grape seed contains antioxidants, and the skin and seeds containresveratrol, which has multiple possible health benefits including being cardio protective, neuron protective,anti-cancer, and anti-aging. The seed extract of V. vinifera has been scientifically investigated to evaluate its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory,anti-bacterial, and anti-allergic activities. On the skin, grape seed extract was shown to be protective againstUVB-induced damage, modulating anti-oxidant enzymes and IL-1ß levels. In a recent clinical trial, anemulsion containing grape seed extract displayed improvement of skin brightening, elasticity, and sebumcontent, implicating cosmetic application of grapevine. Furthermore, a potential for oral care was studied withgrape seed extract. Remineralization is one of the treatments for the tooth decay and grape seed extractpromotes remineralization in this study.
