Origanum majorana is a frost-tender perennial undershrub and is commonly known as sweet marjoram. This plant is native to Cyprus, Turkey, and naturalized in parts of the Mediterranean region. Majoram was initially employed by Hippocrates as an antiseptic agent and introduced to Europe and Greece in the middle age. It was called ‘amarakos’ among greeks meaning a symbol of love, honor, and happiness. Traditionally, majoram leaves are used as home remedies for rheumatic pain, nervous disorders, insomnia, and even skincare.
Many scientific studies showed that O. majorana is a rich source of polyphenols known to have a natural anti-oxidant property. Also, it is reported that marjoram has potent anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects attributed to its high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids.
