Artemisia princeps, also called ‘Japanese mugwort,’ is a perennial plant originating and still growing in East Asia. It has also been widely used as a culinary herb and medicine. In Korea, the young aromatic leaves are harvested in the spring when their aroma, flavor, and color are at their best and are used in the preparation of many foods, including rice cakes, pancakes, soups, and tea. Traditionally, it has been used as an herbal medicine to treat gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and circulatory disorders, such as dysmenorrhea, haematuria, and hemorrhoids. A. princeps contains flavonoids such as eupatilin, jaceosidin, apigenin, and eupafolin. Recent studies demonstrated that eupatilin and jaceosidin inhibits anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting NF-κB activity and nitric oxide production.
