Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) is also known as Seville orange, sour orange, or marmalade orange. It is native to Southeast Asia and cultivated mainly in subtropical regions such as the Mediterranean, which was introduced by the Moors in the 10th century. It is also grown in Florida, USA, and Central America. The fruits have thick, dimpled skin and are not eaten raw as they are extremely bitter and sour. They are mainly used for making marmalades, compotes, and liquors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, bitter orange is used to activate vital energy and circulation.
