Nelumbo nucifera, also known as lotus or sacred lotus, is a large aquatic herb widely distributed in many Asian countries including India, China and Korea. The flower, seed, young leaves and roots are edible. Especially popular part is the lotus root which is eaten as a steamed or fried vegetable. Lotus root is used for medicine, too. It is rich in flavonoids, fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Traditionally, lotus root was thought to treat chronic health conditions if it was taken internally for long periods of time. Through in vitro test, anti-oxidant and skin brightening effects were confirmed.
