Opuntia
ficus-indica is a cactus commonly known as fig
opuntia or prickly pear. It is believed to be originated in Mexico and is
domesticated in arid and semiarid areas of the world. It is a crop plant primarily
grown for its fruits at the edge of the succulent stem. It is widely consumed
as food, either eaten raw or cooked, produced as jams or jellies, or used as a
colorant of flavor. Traditionally, O. ficus-indica
was used as a medicine to treat bronchus, asthma, gastritis, lung diseases,
skin diseases, and etc. Additionally, it shows good effects on gastritis caused
by stress, diabetes, immune system, and improving memory, and it has been
proven to possess anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial effects in many studies. The
fruits of O. ficus-indica contain a
high amount of vitamins C and E, carotenoids, dietary fiber, amino acids, and
flavonoids, which are reported to have hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and
anti-oxidant properties.
