Morus alba, known as white mulberry, is native to northern China, widely cultivated to feed the silkworms throughout the world. The fruit is edible and is commonly used in pies, tarts, wines, and cordials. In Traditional Chinese and Korean Medicine, the leaves are taken internally in the treatment of sore throats, colds, eye infections, and nose bleed. It is also used as an anti-hyperglycemic to treat and prevent diabetes mellitus. In several studies, the researchers have found that the root bark extract of M. alba has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. It is reported that the active compounds from the root bark, sanggenon and albanol, inhibited iNOS and COX-2 and defeated pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators effectively.
