Oenanthe javanica is a perennial plant in the genus of water dropwort originated from East Asia. It is commonly called minari in Korean, seri in Japanese, and water dropwort, Japanese parsley, or Chinese celery in English. Young leaves and stems are eaten raw or cooked. They are also used as seasoning due to the flavor similar to carrot or parsley.
Medicinally in East Asian countries, O. javanica is used for detoxification, lowering fever, and contracting the blood vessels to stop bleeding. It is also used in the treatment of epidemic influenza, jaundice, abdominal pain, hypertension, haematuria, and metrorrhagia. It is reported in research studies that the extract of O. javanica has various pharmacological activities including anti-arrhythmic, anti-coagulant, anti-diabetic, anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties, and this is due to its content of persicarin and isorhamnetin.
