Spicules are structures found in most sponges living in clean freshwater or seas. They are in the form of microneedles, composed of a porous bone structure with a needle-shaped interior that is hollow. After going through refining and purification processes, it can be used in cosmetics and medical industries, helping transdermal delivery of active ingredients deep into the skin. It is believed that the mechanism of actions by spicules is either microablative technique or puncture-resembling mesotherapy. The small and sharp thorns of spicules creates deep punctures in skin, facilitating active ingredients to permeate into deeper skin layers.
