Litchi chinensis, commonly called as lychee, is the sole member of the genus Litchi in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. It is native to southern China grown in tropical and subtropical regions in the world. The fruits are usually eaten fresh and are also used for many kinds of dishes as desserts. Traditionally, they were used as tonic for heart, brain, and liver. Lychee was reported as one of the highest polyphenol containing fruits. The pericarp of lychee contains polyphenolic compounds such as tannins, epicatechin, procyanidins, anthocyanins, rutin, and quercetin glucoside. The fruits also contain many polysaccharides and minerals. They are rich in vitamin C and show strong anti-oxidant activities. Lychee has been investigated for its nutritive composition, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities as well as immunomodulatory activities.
