Hibiscus sabdariffa, commonly known as roselle, is an annual or perennial herb native to the Old World tropics. H. sabdariffa is considered to have anti-hypertensive properties and used in folk medicine as a diuretic, mild laxative, and treatment for cardiac and nerve diseases and cancer. H. sabdariffa has high amount of antioxidants, which is known to be one of the highest among the widely available food. It is also reported in scientific study that H. sabdariffa has anti-microbial activity against E. coli.
