Apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree in the genus Malus and the family Rosaceae. Apples are one of the most widely cultivated and the most well-known fruits used by humans. The apple tree is perhaps the earliest tree to be cultivated and the fruits have been improved through selection over thousands of years. Apples are often eaten raw and the whole fruit including the skin is suitable for human consumption. Apple contains relatively low amounts of vitamin C, but is a rich source of antioxidant compounds. Apple contains high concentration of pectin, that may help with controlling cholesterol, weight loss and also acts as an anti-oxidant. Apple has phenolic phytochemicals such as quercetin and epicatechin that demonstrate anti-oxidant activity.
