Vanilla planifolia, commonly called as vanilla, is a popular orchid species native to Mexico. The name “vanilla” is derived from the Spanish word “vaina,” which means “little pod.” It has been traditionally used to treat dysmenorrhea, fever, hysteria, dyspepsia, dental caries, toothache, and so on. Vanillin, the main constituent of V. planifolia, is extensively used as a flavoring agent in food, beverage, perfumery and, medicine. It is known that vanillin has structural similarities with other anti-oxidants such as eugenol, zingerone, and capsaicin. A scientific article reported that methanol extract and all the fractions of methanol extract of vanilla pods showed anti-oxidant activities by scavenging radicals. Also, the leaf extract of vanilla has been demonstrated to have anti-microbial activities.
