Achillea millefolium commonly known as yarrow. It was named after Achilles, the Greek mythical hero who was said to have used this herb to stop bleeding and to heal his warriors’ wounds on the battle field. Yarrow has been recognized as a healing herb or a wound herb for centuries. Traditionally, it has been used for many medicinal purposes both internally and externally. For internal use, yarrow is believed to treat colds and fever as an astringent, to reduce spasm as a peripheral vasodilator and to aid digestion. Externally, it was used for wounds, cuts, scrapes, rashes, and burns. The leaves and stems used to help stop bleeding and aid in healing. Yarrow ointments were used to soften and heal skin, and an infusion was used as a face wash to refine pores.
