Cryptomeria japonica is a huge evergreen tree, reaching up to 70 m. The leaves are arranged spirally, needle-like, 0.5-1 cm, and used in reducing inflammation and pain in Hanbang, Traditional Korean Medicine. The timber is extremely fragrant and resistant to insects, the essential oil and wood have been used as incense sticks and scented ornaments for women as well. In Jeju, C. japonica has been planted as a windbreak forest and one of the most scenic roads is called ‘Saryonisupgil’ which means ‘sacred forest trail’ in Jeju dialect. Cedar trees are planted on both sides of the road and attract locals and tourists.
According to several scientific studies, extracts from different parts of Cryptomeria japonica have been studied as having anti-fungal activity. n other studies, its essential oil, containing kaurene, elemol, γ-eudesmol, and sabinene, showed potent anti-microbial activity.
