Laminaria hyperborea, a kind of large brown alga that is generically known as kelp, is in the family Laminariacea and commonly called as tangle or cuvie. Usually, L. hyperborea grows to 2 m with a conical holdfast and rigid stipe. This seaweed is easily seen in the shallow ocean, especially the coasts of Britain and Ireland.
L. hyperborea is studied that it has phenolic compounds and laminarins as its active compounds. In a study, it is revealed that laminarin extracted from L. hyperborea has anti-oxidant efficacy by showing DPPH scavenging activity. Also, β-glucans derived from L. hyperborea shows anti-inflammatory activity by downregulating the proinflammatory cytokine markers in the cells.
