Kochia scoparia is a synonym of Bassia scoparia. K. scoparia is a large annual herb native to Eurasia. The seeds contain high quantity of protein and fat, which makes them valuable as poultry feed. The dried seeds are drunk as a medicinal tea in Korea to treat headaches, and the dried fruits have been used as a main ingredient in Traditional Korean Medicine for skin diseases, such as eczema and scabies, and for diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis in Korean folk remedies.
Scientifically, it has been reported that K. scoparia shows anti-inflammatory actions through the inhibition of LPSinduced PGE2 and TNF-α production in rat macrophages. It also inhibited mRNA expression of LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 proteins. When applied topically in animal model, water extract of K. scoparia inhibited skin thickening and hyperkeratosis, which are hallmarks of skin inflammatory diseases such as dermatitis.
