Benincasa cerifera is a synonym of Benincasa hispida, and commonly called with various names including winter melon and wax gourd. B. cerifera, belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae, is a vegetable used widely in semi-tropical countries. In Ayurveda, it is recommended for management of peptic ulcer, hemorrhages from internal organs, epilepsy, and other nervous disorders. In Chinese medicine, the rind is used to treat urinary dysfunction, while the fruit is used to treat summer fevers. Anti-oxidant activity of winter melon seed extract was studied using ethanol extraction. Hispidalin, the bioactive peptide, from the seeds of B. hispida has anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activities.
