Poncirus trifoliata, commonly called as trifoliate orange or hardy orange, is a synonym of Citrus trifoliata. It is a shrub or a small tree, and it bears edible, wrinkled, yellow fruits with bitter and acrid flavor but with a wonderful aroma. The fruits are widely used in Traditional Oriental Medicine as a remedy for allergic inflammation. Immature fruit of P. trifolia, Ponciri Fructus, is used as a diuretic, expectorant, and sedative in Traditional Korean Medicine. It is used to treat for dyspepsia, gastralgia, and jaundice as well.
A research article demonstrated that Ponciri Fructus ethanol extract considerably decreased the melanin contents. In GNS, the skin brightening property of Hardy Orange Extract has been identified by measuring the decrease of melanin synthesis in melanocytes. As a result, it showed 59% decrease of intra-melanin by applying 2% of Hardy Orange Extract. And it showed 69% decrease in the NO production as well for anti-inflammatory effect.
