Salicornia, including Salicornia herbacea commonly known as glasswort, is in a genus of succulent and annual herbs which resemble corals. Being a salt-tolerant plant, S. herbacea grows on salt marshes in the western and southern coasts of South Korea. The whole plant is green, but it turns red in autumn. In China, S. herbacea was considered an arcane plant a long time ago. This plant with a salty taste has been eaten for a long time in different ways in coastal areas of Korea, and it is known as a healthy food material due to abundant minerals. In Korean folk remedies, it is known for treating constipation, obesity, hypertension, cancer, and inflammation-related diseases. According to a study, methyl 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinate, an active compound of S. herbacea, is revealed to inhibit melanin production.
