Asparagus cochinchinensis is a perennial plant growing in Korea, China and Japan. It is a low growing shrub with cylindrical or tubular branches. The roots have a smooth surface and initially taste sweet but leave a bitter after taste. The dried roots of A. cochinchinensis have a yellowish color with a sweet flavor. The dried root has been used for a long time in Traditional Oriental Medicine as a result of its numerous therapeutic actions. It is indicated in the use of inflammatory conditions, the use as an anti-septic, an anti-tussive, an anti-bacterial, a nervine, an anti-pyretic, and an anti-cancer agent, and the use in treating digestive complaints. Traditionally, the plant was used for treating fever, cough, kidney diseases, and benign breast tumors. Phytochemically, it has been reported that A. cohinchinensis is rich in polysaccharides, mucilage, sugar, and several flavonoids such as quercetin, inulin, rutin, and kaempferol.
