Benincasa cerifera is a synonym of Benincasa hispida and commonly called with various names, including winter melon and wax gourd. B. cerifera, a vegetable used widely in Thailand, India, and other semi-tropical countries, belongsto the family Cucurbitaceae. In Chinese medicine, the rind is used to treat urinary dysfunction, while the fruit is used to treat summer fevers. Amino acids, mucins, mineral salts, starch, and calcium are known to be present in B. cerifera. Phytochemical studies on the fruit identified two triterpenes, alunsenol, and mutiflorenol. Also, the pulp of B. cerifera is a rich source of vitamins B and C.
