Chondrus crispus is a species of red algae commonly called Irish moss or carrageen moss which grows at the rocky areas of the Atlantic coast of Europe and North America. The main constituent of Irish moss is a polysaccharide carrageenan which has no nutritional value, but has been widely used in the food industry as a bulking agent, emulsifier, humectant, and thickener. In Ireland, Irish moss is used as a remedy for irritable cough, hyperacidity, and sore throat.
Scientifically, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities were reported from C. crispus extract. It was demonstrated that ethanol or acetone extracts of C. crispus showed anti-microbial activities against food pathogenic and food spoilage bacteria. Another study reported that the lipid extract of C. crispus showed anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-stimulated human THP-1 macrophages.
At GNS, skin moisturizing, anti-senescence, and anti-wrinkle effects were found thruough in vitro efficacy evaluation.
