Rhodiola rosea known as golden root or roseroot grows primarily in dry sandy ground at high altitudes in the arctic areas of Europe and Asia. Dried roots and rhizomes were used as a traditional medicine in Asia for a long time to treat anxiety, fatigue, stress, depression, and high altitude sickness. Pharmacologically, R. rosea is known to possess anti-hypoxic, anti-oxidant, anti-depressant, anti-aging, and anti-cancer properties. There are some reports which show that R. rosea exerts anti-inflammatory actions as well as memory stimulation and enhancement of immune response. R. rosea contains many bioactive compounds that may contribute to its effects such as rosavins, which include rosavin, rosarin and rosin. Other active compounds, rhodioloside and tyrosol, were also found from this plant.
