Terminalia chebula is a deciduous tree native to India, Nepal, southwestern China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Vietnam. It yields smallish, ribbed, and nut-like fruits picked when still green and then pickled, boiled with a bit of sugar in their syrup, or used in preserves. The fruit is a rejuvenating, laxative, astringent, anthelmintic, nervine, expectorant, tonic, carminative, and appetite stimulant. Studies on the fruits reported that the fruits have anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, anti-carcinogenic, hepatoprotective, gastroprotective, anti-colitic, anti-oxidant, and immunomodulatory activities.
