Aloe barbadensis, commonly called aloe vera, is a succulent plant of the genus Aloe that originates from the Arabian Peninsula but grows wild in tropical climates. Aloe has been used for centuries as a remedy for various ailments, especially the skin of aloe. Aloe is a popular ingredient in after-sun products. The gel is processed into a juice used as a bowel tonic, laxative, and health drink. The laxative properties are due to the anthraquinones in the sap. 

Research has shown that aloe may be beneficial in healing wounds. Molecular analysis of human liver and lung cell lines treated with aloe extract demonstrated an upregulation of cell proliferation markers.
