Fucus vesiculosus, known by the common name bladder wrack or bladderwrack, is a seaweed found on the coasts of the North Sea. Primary chemical constituents of this organism include mucilage, algin, mannitol, fucitol, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, iodine, bromine, potassium, volatile oils, and many other minerals.
Recent studies of bladderwrack report that it improves the contraction of fibroblast-populated collagen gels by enriching integrin molecules. The aqueous extract decreases the thickness and increases elasticity in cheek skin by topical application. Some studies suggest that bladderwrack extract possesses anti-aging activities and may be useful for cosmetics.
