Nymphaea caerulea, commonly called blue (Egyptian) lotus, is a lily that grows in water. It is native to northern Africa and southwestern Asia. Traditionally in Egypt, N. caerulea was regarded as a natural sedative. According to a study, it is believed that Egyptians used blue lotus extract to get a narcotic effect. Today, the blue lotus flower is a sleep aid and anxiety reliever as it contains apomorphine and nuciferine. Besides, several compounds extracted from the flowers of N. caerulea have shown an anti-oxidant effect by inhibiting ROS generation in Myelomonocytic HL 60 cells. In the test, some compounds demonstrated better inhibiting activity than vitamin C, which was tested as a positive control.
