Caragana is a member of the Fabaceae family and is known as a pea shrub. In Asia, the Caragana species are believed to have a wide range of functions, including nourishing the blood and promoting blood flow, invigorating the spleen and vital energy, fortifying the kidneys, and nourishing yin. Caragana sinica, a deciduous shrub that rapidly grows with resistance to environmental stress, has been used to treat headaches, cough, asthma, strain-induced fatigue, and nose bleeds. Dried roots of C. sinica have been used for treating asthenia syndrome, vascular hypertension, leukorrhea, bruises, contusion, rheumatism, neuralgia, arthritis, and migraine as folk medicine.
