Plantago asiatica, also referred to as Asian plantain, is a perennial herb with leaves arising directly from the root. Young leaves and roots are edible and eaten in salads during spring. The seeds are used to make tea. In addition to their culinary uses, the seeds and leaves were often used as a traditional medicine in Korea and China. The aerial parts of P. asiatica have been used as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-asthmatic medicine in Asian countries for many years. The major bioactive compounds in the aerial parts of P. asiatica are phenylethanoid glycosides, including acteoside and plantamajoside, which were reported to impart various biological functions such as anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant activities.
