Chelidonium majus, commonly celandine or tetterwort in Europe, is an herbaceous perennial plant, which is the only species in the genus Chelidonium. It is a plant highly praised for its therapeutic potential and is widely used in Traditional Oriental Medicine. In Traditional Oriental Medicine, C. majus belongs to the class of heat-clearing plants, having a cooling nature. It is mainly used to treat blood stasis, relieve pain, promote diuresis in edema and ascites, treat jaundice, and relieve cough. Crude extracts of C. majus exhibit various biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, immunomodulatory, anti-tumoral, choleretic, hepatoprotective, analgesic, etc., obtained by its major constituents, such as isoquinoline, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. It is also reported in the scientific study that the extracts of C. majus can inhibit the development of atopic dermatitis symptoms.
