Prunus serrulata is a species of cherry native to Korea, Japan, and China. It is widely grown as an ornamental flowering tree in its native countries and throughout the world`s temperate regions. The red fruits of this plant are edible. They have been used in traditional folk medicine to treat various diseases, such as heart failure, beriberi, dropsy, and mastitis. This herbal remedy is an emmenagogue and is also used for toothache.
Several researchers have found that extracts from P. serrulata show significant anti-oxidant activities, such as free radical scavenging activity and ROS generation inhibition comparable to ascorbic acid. It is reported that flowers of P. serrulata show anti-oxidant activity by scavenging the radicals and cell protection activity by preventing oxidative DNA damage.
