Cnidium officinale is a perennial herb of the Apiaceae native to China and widely distributed and cultivated in Korea, China, and Japan. C. officinale is used in oriental herbal medicine to treat pain, inflammation, and menstrual disturbances. The dried rhizome of C. officinale has been widely used in folk medicine in Korea. Constituents, though not an exhaustive list, include; butylphthalide, sedanoic acid, cnidilide, ligustilide, and neocnidilide.
The extracts from C. officinale show inhibitory activities on lipid peroxidation and show anti-oxidant effects with strong radical scavenging and metal chelation activities. The study also indicates anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA expression induced by LPS. Furthermore, it is reported that the essential oils of C. officinale can protect from UVB-induced DNA damage.
