Cocos nucifera, coconut, is found across tropical and subtropical regions. Coconut has been used for food and other purposes like fiber, fuel, water, and shelter. C. nucifera fruits are used popularly to treat diarrhea and arthritis. It is also well-used as a lotion traditionally in many places of the world. In Ayurvedic medicine, the oil, milk, cream, and water of coconut are all used to treat hair loss, burns, and heart problems.
Additionally, in Indonesia, it is used to heal wounds by an ethnic group. Many research articles have reported the benefits of C. nucifera on the skin. In a study, young coconut juice showed an effect on cutaneous wound healing by increasing epidermal and dermal thickness in ovariectomized rats. Moreover, young coconut juice increased the number and size of hair follicles and restored collagen fiber. It was also shown that all varieties of C. nucifera show anti-oxidant activities by scavenging the DPPH radical and nitric oxide. Besides, C. nucifera extract has anti-microbial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
