Corallina officinalis is a red seaweed that grows on rocks on the lower shore. It forms calcium carbonate deposits within its cells, making this seaweed appear pink.
Though not many studies are conducted for Corallina officinalis, it is reported that the sulfated polysaccharides from C. officinalis showed anti-oxidant activities, including hydroxyl radicals scavenging effect, superoxide radical scavenging capacity, DPPH radical activity, and reducing power. It is also reported that it can reduce the oxidant stress caused by UVB irradiation, suggesting its anti-photoaging ability.
