Cudrania tricuspidata is a deciduous tree distributed and medicinally used in East Asia. The tree is in flower in June, and the round-shaped red fruits ripen in autumn. The fruits taste slightly tart-to-sweet and are similar to the related mulberry. Leaves are used in tea. This tree`s cortex and root bark have been used as a traditional herbal medicine for treating lumbago, hemoptysis, and contusions. Various active compounds were isolated from the root bark, such as catecholic xanthones and flavonoids, which are known to exert multiple biological activities, including anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties.
