Hylocereus is a cactus genus, and several species in this genus have large edible fruits, commonly known as dragon fruits. Although the native origin has never been resolved, H. undatus is widely distributed throughout the tropical region. The flowers of H. undatus bloom overnight and usually wilt by the morning, and this is why it is commonly known as the queen of the night or Cinderella plant.
H. undatus were traditionally used by the Mayas as a hypoglycemic, diuretic, and wound-healing agent. It is also reported to have many health benefits, including prevention of memory loss, anti-cancer activity, control of blood glucose levels in diabetes patients, strong anti-oxidant activities, and wound healing effects. It is reported that the fruit contains vitamin C three times more than that of carrot. Other phytochemicals found in H. undatus, such as betanin, betacyanin, and phyllotactic, are reported to show pharmacological properties such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammation.
