Moringa oleifera, also called moringa or drumstick tree, is a fast-growing deciduous tree mainly grown in tropical and subtropical areas in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where it is used as a food as well as folk medicine. The leaves, fruits, flowers, and immature pods of M. oleifera are used as highly nutritious vegetables. The leaves of M. oleifera are considered a rich source of vitamins and minerals, while the seeds are rich in proteins and fatty acids.
Various parts of the plant, including bark, sap, root, leaf, seed, and flower, are used as a folk remedy to treat gastric ulcers, skin diseases, diabetes, and fatigue. The major phytochemical constituents of the leaves are phenolic compounds and flavonoids such as crypto-chlorogenic acid, isoquercetin, and astragalin. Several scientific studies demonstrated that M. oleifera exhibits anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory activities due to abundant phenolic acids and flavonoids.
