Echinacea purpurea, commonly called echinacea or purple coneflower, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Asteraceae family. The plant grows to 2-5 feet tall, and purple coneflowers bloom from June to August. It originates from eastern North America and has been spread to most of the eastern and midwestern parts of the United States. In North America, it is a popular idea that E. purpurea extract is safe and effective for preventing the common cold. Also, in European countries, it is common for doctors to prescribe echinacea tea for colds. In history, native Americans used echinacea to treat snake bites and wounds.
