Epimedium koreanum is a species used in Traditional Korean Medicine to treat “coldness” and improve female health. More than 260 compounds have been isolated from E. koreanum, and the most prominent components are the prenylated flavonol glycosides. The main ingredients are icariin, epimedin A, B, and C, and hyperin. Luteolin isolated from E. koreanum showed a stronger radical scavenging ability than vitamin C in a dose-dependent manner. Another active compound extracted from E. koreanum, ikarisoside A, also indicated strong anti-oxidant properties, according to a recent scientific study. In the same study, it was reported that ikarisoside A significantly suppresses the LPS-induced expression of iNOS and the production of NO, as well as the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These results suggest that E. koreanum may be a potential anti-inflammatory agent.
