Euphrasia officinalis is commonly known as eyebright or eyebright grass. It is widely distributed in alpine pastures throughout Britain, Europe, Asia, and North America. Eyebright is used in herbal medicine for eye problems such as conjunctivitis and hordeolum. It is also an astringent and anti-inflammatory agent to reduce skin allergies and itching. As eyebright has an astringent effect, it is used topically for treating acne and skin inflammation. Cold eyebright cataplasm was used to enhance skin elasticity.

The anti-oxidant activities of its constituents, such as flavonoids, tannins, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, were carefully examined by fractionations and radical scavenging assays. Additionally, the anti-microbial activity of its extracts was demonstrated. Its therapeutic effect on the eye was also scientifically evaluated in vivo and in vitro. Eyebright extract inhibited IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 in human corneal cells, confirming the anti-inflammatory activity.
