Paeonia officinalis, commonly called garden peony or common peony, is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe. The genus Paeonia is named after the mythical Greek figure Paeon, who is the physician of the gods. Legend tells us that Paeon was saved from death by being turned into a peony plant.
Typically, garden peony grows up to 60 to 70 cm and blooms in late spring. Flowers are fragrant, cup-shaped, crimson red and are about 10 to 13 cm in diameter. Medicinally, its root is used for several thousands of years as a treatment for epilepsy and for promoting menstruation.
