Citrus paradisi , commonly known as grapefruit, is one type of citrus tree grown in subtropical areas. Unlike other species in Citrus , this tree grows in clusters, and it seems the name grapefruit originates from the way it grows, similar to the bunches of grapes. It is known for its bitter sweet fruits, varying in color depending on the cultivars, which include white, pink, and red pulps of varying sweetness. It has been used as a folk medicine in many different countries for anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and astringent efficacies. Grapefruit is an excellent source of many nutrients, phytochemicals, and vitamin C. It contains the pectin and the beneficial anti oxidant lycopene. The red pink of grapefruit shows how much lycopene and carotenoids are contained. Grapefruit also contains large quantities of a polyamine called spermidine, which may be related to aging. It is known to be necessary for cell growth and maturation.
