Annona muricata is a broad leaf evergreen tree native to Central America, but now widely cultivated throughout tropical and subtropical regions. It tolerates poor soil and prefers lowland areas. The fruit is known as soursop due to its acidic taste when ripe, and is very popular in desserts and beverages. The flesh of the fruit is consisted of white pulp and fiber, which is used in cooking. All portions of the plant are extensively used in traditional medicine. The fruit is used for arthritic pain, neuralgia, stomach problems, parasitic infections, and cancer. The leaves are used to treat cystitis, diabetes, headaches, and insomnia.
Phytochemical research has shown alkaloids, flavonols, and phenolics in A. muricata. Correlation of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were also demonstrated. Other research has reported wound healing activity of leaf extract by topical application, suggesting skin care potential of A. muricata leaves.
