Lithospermum erythrorhizon is a perennial plant in the genus Lithospermum (family Boraginaceae). It
grows in the mountains of East Asia and has been used as a natural dye to obtain purple color in Korea. In Korea, the root is called ‘Jageun’, which literally means purple-colored root. The root has also been used medicinally in traditional herbal medicine for alleviating fever, promoting blood circulation, and treating skin eczema. Recent studies demonstrated that L. erythrorhizon extracts show anti-oxidant, anti-allergic and wound healing activities, which shows a possibility that this material can be effective as a cosmetic ingredient not only as a herbal medicine.
GNS found its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effect through in vitro tests.
