Physalisalkekengi, also known as ground cherry, is a well-known edible plant with abundant vitamin C. This juicy fruit is eaten fresh and cooked, but not tasty. Aerial parts of the plant have been traditionally used in China and Korea to treat cough, middle ear infection, sore throat, tumor, hepatitis, and urinary problems. Especially, it is highly recommended for alleviating fever. Pharmacological investigations on P. alkekengihave been carried out and have shown diverse properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, and fever-lowering activities.
