Lycium chinense is mainly distributed in East Asia and grown in particular in south China, Korea, and Japan. The bright orange red ellipsoid berries are one of the most popular tonic herbs and have been frequently used in oriental herbal medicine for thousands of years. The fruits are usually infused in water or spirit liquor. L. chinense fruit are rich in vitamins C and B, minerals, flavonoids, carotenes, and many other bio active compounds. The main flavonoids present in water extract are rutin and chlorogenic acid, and in 50% ethanolic extract, rutin and protocatechuic acid are the primary components. Research has shown that in addition to excellent anti oxidant activity as a free radical scavenger, the fruit of L. chinense also displayed significant cytoprotective activity.
