Pinus densiflora is a conifer in the family Pinaceae. It is noted for its irregular yet graceful form. The bitter leaves (needles) are harvested between spring and autumn as they are desired for their essential oil constituents including: α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, phellandrene, limonene, borneol, and borneol acetate. These essential oils are known to inhibit bacterial and microbial growth.
The untreated needles have long been used in folk medicine where it was believed the most potent effects came from needles harvested during the winter months. The actions of the needles were thought to act to remove dampness and stop bleeding. In addition to the needles, it is thought the cones, cortices, and pollen have also been used to promote health.
