Pinus densiflora is a conifer in the family Pinaceae. It is noted for its irregular yet graceful form and has a common name called pine tree. It is en evergreen tree grown from low to high altitudes in mountains. Pine tree always looks green and strong in any weather condition. Traditionally, pine tree is one of representative trees to be planted on the entrance of a village to ward off evil spirits. Additionally, pine tree is one of the ten traditional Symbols of Longevity as well as a firm integrity. In old story, if thick pine tree appears during a dream, it means a big promotion in work place and also thrive in family. The bitter leaves (needles) are harvested between spring and autumn as they are desired for their essential oil constituents including: α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, phellandrene, limonene, borneol, and borneolacetate. These essential oils are known to inhibit bacterial and microbial growth. The untreated needles have long been used in folk medicine where it was believed the most potent effects came from needles harvested during the winter months. The actions of the needles were thought to act to remove dampness and stop bleeding. In addition to the needles, it is thought the cones, cortices, and pollen have also been used to promote health.
